2024 Fun Science Summer Camp at Discover Learning Center is sponsored by Haycock Elementary School PTA 

Welcome to the Fun Science Summer Camp at Discover Learning Center! We provide a high quality, unique and fun leaning experience with science-based team activities. Our camp is designed to foster creativity and collaboration as science is explored in a playful and engaging atmosphere.

This summer program is designed to give students knowledge and experience concerning Science Olympiad, MathCounts, Critical thinking and various technologies. Concurrently, we will engage in courses in writing, reading, and math.

Science Olympiad program seeks to build interests and inspire passion through teamwork, hands-on experiences, variety in topics, and fun and rewarding tournaments.

Discover Learning Center is a fulfilling learning environment with devoted teachers that are carefully selected. Not only are they teachers but also are role models for our students.  All teachers are Fairfax Public school certified and/or Virginia AAP endorsement.

At the end of each session, we will celebrate individual and team achievements.

The final winner from all the activities and competitions will have a free movie ticket.

Daily Schedule:

8:15 am to 8:30 am: Drop off time.

8:30 am to 12:30 pm: Two-hour English class, Two-hour Math class, a recess between the two classes.  The students are fully engaged.

Teacher: English teachers and Math teachers

12:30 pm to 1:30 pm: Lunch

1:30 pm to 3:30 pm:  Two-hour Science Olympiad project and competition.  The students are fully engaged.

Teacher: Science teacher

3:30 pm to 5:30 pm: MathCounts practice/competition, Critical Thinking, Spelling Bee competition, Sports competition, Chess, Computer Science, Debate and Team-building activities.  The students are fully engaged.

Teacher: Math and/or Science teacher

5:30 to 6:30 pm: Afternoon Extended Care ($15 per day)

Every morning (8:30am to 12:30pm): the program will cover English reading comprehension, writing and grammar for two hours, math for two hours. The curriculums, lessons plan and materials in English and Math classes carry on with the high quality at Discover Learning Center during summer camp.  The students will have a recess between the two classes. The classes will be taught by the English teachers and math teachers from FCPS. For details of each grade, please see below.  

Science Olympiad: Every afternoon for two hours, all the students will participate in the full-life cycle of the Science Olympiad projects design, building, practice and preparation for the competition at the end.  The Science teacher will coordinate and coach the teams.  The team will receive scores every day.

Team-building activities: Every afternoon, the last two hours, the team-building activities is the most fun part. There is no body want to miss it.  All events and competitions will be between the teams instructed by teacher.  Here are the basic items in the team building activities, but not limited to:

  • Mathcounts practice/competition
  • Critical Thinking
  • Spelling Bee competition
  • Sports competition
  • Chess
  • Computer Science
  • Debate
  • Other activities

Scoring: Each team will receive scores from the Science Olympiad activities and team-building events every day. The winner of the session is determined by each team's overall score and individual score. 

Full Day Summer Camp Sessions: (Monday to Friday, drop off at 8:15 am, From 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, students will be engaged by teachers)

Half Day Summer Camp Sessions: (Monday to Friday, drop off at 8:15 am, Classes start at 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, or 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm)

Sibling Discount: -$30.00 for the second child per session

The Late Registration fee will be charged after 5/12/2024: +$100.00 per student, per session, it is non-refundable

Rising 8th/TJ prep:

The goal of the TJ prep summer camp is to prepare students for the Math and Science Problem-Solving essay writing, and Students Portrait sheet writing.   During the program, students will spend considerable time in class and at home on science, math, and writing. The course will cover grammar and writing conventions; students will be required to practice writing one essay during each class session and another essay between sessions at home.  The instructor will provide students with individualized feedback designed to help each student to improve his/her writing skills. The same teachers teaching TJ prep. in spring will teach TJ prep. during the summer. The course will cover the same curriculum and materials in the spring semester:

  • SPS: Students Portrait Sheet
  • TJHSST Essays: Problem Solving Essay
